Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. goods on Tuesday, escalating a trade war with the United States after negotiations collapsed over the weekend. The measures, effective Sept. 8, will impose duties of 15%, 25% and 50% on more than 700 American products, including steel, aluminum, furniture, clothing, dairy, appliances, seafood, cosmetics and toilet paper, according to Canadian officials .

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the tariffs are “proportionate, targeted and strategic,” designed to “match dollar for dollar, rate for rate” against President Donald Trump’s tariff agenda. The 50% levies will apply to steel, aluminum, furniture and clothing, while 25% duties will target dairy, appliances, cheese and fish. A 15% rate will cover other products, including rubber molds and machinery parts .

Canada also unveiled a C$7.5 billion ($5.4 billion) support package for workers and businesses affected by the dispute. Champagne said the measures aim to protect Canadian industry and “level the playing field,” not to collect revenue .

The retaliation follows Trump’s 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, which took effect Saturday. Prime Minister Mark Carney accused Washington of seeking to “destroy our major industries” and said the U.S. demands during failed talks showed an intent to subordinate Canada .

Trump intensified the confrontation on Tuesday, saying the U.S. was giving “serious consideration” to renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” because Washington does not expect to do much business with Ontario going forward . He also threatened new 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel, while Carney said U.S. trade demands sought to undermine Canada’s key sectors .

Canada’s existing 25% tariff on U.S.-made cars will remain in place. Officials said the new measures are intended to reduce U.S. imports and protect domestic companies, with steel imports already down 30% since Canada imposed a 25% tariff earlier .

"Lake America": Trump turns Canada feud toward Lake Ontario President Trumps war of words with Canada continued Tuesday amid a dispute over trade negotiations. The big picture: U.S. and Canadian officials have swapped barbs since negotiations collapsed last week, but Trump took the spat to a new level when he threatened to rename Lake Ontario to "Lake America" and claimed Canada had lied about a sticking point in trade talks. What theyre saying: "The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we dont expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer." Trump wrote on Truth Social. Lake Ontario stretches across the U.S.-Canada border, with approximately 47 of the lake belonging to the U.S. Later in the morning, Trump posted a map of the lake, with "Lake Ontario" crossed out and "Lake America" in gold letters above it.The president then posted that he would "never interfere with Canadians speaking French!" referencing comments Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made about U.S. threats to the French language. "In fact, I have never even thought of doing such a stupid thing," Trump added. Carneys office did not immediately respond to Axios request for comment.Catch up quick: U.S.-Canada trade talks collapsed Friday night, triggering 50 tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods. Carney said he would match those levies dollar-for-dollar.And on Monday, Trump upped his threats, saying the U.S. will raise car and truck tariffs to 50, though the duties wont take effect until 2027.The president had previously signaled a deal with Canada was coming, but both sides blamed the other for the talks crumbling.Zoom out: U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also told CNBC that alleged threats to the French language were a "funny fake story."But he alluded to one pain point: Hotly contested Canadian mandates compelling streaming companies to promote and invest in Canadian content that have long been in flux. What were watching: Carney said Monday that "of course" Canada will come back to the negotiating table — if the U.S. has the "right attitude."Go deeper: Mark Carneys defiance of Trump has Canada cheering
