Swiss prosecutors investigate national team captain Xhaka over alleged fake COVID-19 vaccination certificates
Lucerne prosecutors have opened an investigation into Switzerland national team captain Granit Xhaka over allegations of falsified COVID-19 vaccination certificates, the Lucerne police confirmed on Friday. The inquiry centers on whether Xhaka obtained a vaccination certificate without receiving the corresponding shots, with authorities examining potential charges of false certification or document forgery, according to Simon Kopp, head of the Lucerne prosecutor’s office media unit.
Xhaka, 33, currently plays for Premier League club AFC Sunderland. His spokesperson, Andreas Bantel, stated that Xhaka possesses a confirmation from his treating physician certifying he was vaccinated on Jan. 25, 2022, and Nov. 8, 2022. Bantel added that Xhaka would cooperate fully with authorities and would address the details of the case first with prosecutors before making any public statements .
The investigation also involves a doctor whose practice was raided in 2023 on suspicion of issuing false vaccination certificates to multiple individuals, according to reports from Swiss media outlet Blick and Serbian newspaper Danas. The doctor’s lawyer maintains that Xhaka was vaccinated in compliance with regulations . Prosecutors have not specified a timeline for the investigation, but local reports suggest Xhaka may be questioned in early October. Under Swiss law, document forgery can carry penalties of up to five years in prison or fines, though legal experts note first-time offenders often receive conditional sentences .
