Iran warns US against Hormuz interference as France, Britain and Oman plan joint patrols
Iran’s parliament speaker warned on Friday that Tehran would not tolerate any American interference in the Strait of Hormuz, as France and Britain announced plans with Oman to secure the waterway after Iran rejected an international naval mission. Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf told a visiting Chinese delegation in Tehran that “the Islamic Republic of Iran will not allow any US interference in the Strait of Hormuz,” adding that Israel was seeking to undermine a recent Iran-US memorandum of understanding. The warning came as the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle returned to Toulon while France and Britain said they would work with Oman to guarantee safe passage through Hormuz.
The initiative follows Iran’s categorical rejection of a proposed multinational naval mission to the strait. Iran’s vice-foreign minister, Kasem Gharibabadi, said on X that “the Strait of Hormuz is not a venue for military posturing by non-regional powers,” insisting that security of the waterway rested solely with Iran and Oman. France’s President Emmanuel Macron described consultations with Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tariq as a “positive development,” and said French mine-clearing vessels would remain on station to support a broader effort. Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed London’s participation, stating that the UK and France stood ready to contribute to a multinational mission to uphold freedom of navigation.
The diplomatic moves coincide with heightened regional tensions. Iran’s late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was laid to rest in Tehran on Friday after a targeted Israeli strike killed him in February, ending five weeks of war between Israel, the US and Iran. Iran has imposed airspace restrictions during the mourning period. Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen warned it would respond with “unprecedented determination and force” to any Houthi threats after the Iran-aligned group intercepted a Saudi warplane and landed an Iranian civilian flight in Sanaa carrying 200 patients and a Houthi delegation to Tehran. Coalition spokesman Major-General Turki al-Maliki accused the Houthis of diverting attention from domestic failures and exposing Yemeni infrastructure to potential retaliation.
The renewed focus on Hormuz follows a three-month suspension of commercial traffic after Iran seeded the strait with mines. Traffic has since quadrupled, with most vessels flying Iranian flags, including tankers benefiting from temporary US sanctions relief. Iran now demands control over passage approvals as compensation for wartime damage, a demand Washington rejects as it seeks to prevent nuclear weapons acquisition without pursuing regime change. US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz told the Security Council on Thursday that “President Trump’s patience is not unlimited,” accusing Iran of defying the council and its neighbors. Iran’s UN envoy Amir Saeid Iravani countered that US military bases in the Gulf “bring nothing but insecurity,” urging Washington to support a regional security framework instead of unilateral interference.
Against this backdrop, France and Britain’s proposal to coordinate with Oman marks a tentative step toward stabilising one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes. Yet the initiative faces immediate rejection from Tehran, which insists it alone can guarantee Hormuz’s security. With Khamenei’s funeral underway and regional proxies on high alert, the risk remains that any miscalculation could reignite conflict in a corridor that carries a fifth of the world’s seaborne oil.
