US marks anniversary of attacks with memorials at Ground Zero, Pentagon and Pennsylvania field
The United States commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on Friday with memorials at Ground Zero in New York, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania, where nearly 3,000 people died in the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history.
At Ground Zero, relatives of the victims read the names of the 2,977 killed as six moments of silence marked the times of the plane impacts and the collapse of the Twin Towers. For the first time, a seventh moment of silence honored those who later died from 9/11-related illnesses, with reports noting 9,000 such deaths .
Former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden attended the New York ceremony, alongside Vice President JD Vance. President Donald Trump, who did not attend, spoke at the Pentagon, where he paid tribute to the victims and linked the attacks to his administration’s conflict with Iran. “We will never, ever forget. That’s why we fight today. We don’t have a choice. There can only be victory,” Trump said .
During the name-reading in New York, Terry Strada, a widow of a 9/11 victim, criticized Saudi Arabia’s alleged role in the attacks, urging Trump to act. “How can it be 25 years and we still have no justice?” she said, thanking Vance for attending and asking him to relay her message .
The CIA also released previously classified intelligence reports from the years before the attacks, revealing that agencies had warned of a potential plane-based threat but lacked specific details about the 2001 plot .
