Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, announced on Monday that she will run for a full six-year term to fill her brother’s seat in the U.S. Senate.
Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and a close ally of President Donald Trump, died at the age of 71 on July 11 due to an aortic tear caused by cardiovascular disease. Following his death, Darline Graham Nordone was appointed by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to serve the remainder of her brother’s term, which ends in January.
In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Darline Graham Nordone confirmed her candidacy. “I’m in,” she said. She also mentioned that she had been praying and talking to her family about the decision. “It is a tremendous amount of pressure,” she acknowledged, but added, “With the love of my family, with the support of his staff…I feel like I can do it. I feel an inner peace about it.”
President Donald Trump had previously urged Darline Graham Nordone to run for a full term, calling her “a spectacular person, and a true American Patriot.” He endorsed her on Truth Social, stating, “I hope Darline does this, in that there would be nobody better to honor the legacy of her beloved brother, Lindsey. Darline, who comes from an absolutely incredible family, has been a WINNER all of her life and, should she accept, has my Complete and Total Endorsement in the Special Election for U.S. Senate in South Carolina — SHE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN. RUN, DARLINE, RUN!”
The special primary election is scheduled for August 11, 2026. Other candidates who have announced their intention to run include Rep. Russell Fry and Rep. Ralph Norman. Rep. Nancy Mace, who had been considering a run, announced on Monday that she would not enter the contest.
Darline Graham Nordone was sworn into office on July 16, 2026, a day after Governor McMaster announced her appointment. She has never held public office before but has worked to help people with disabilities find employment.
The winner of the August 11 primary will advance to the November ballot to face Democratic candidate Annie Andrews. The winner of the November contest will hold the seat for the full six-year term.
Funeral services for Lindsey Graham are scheduled to be held next week in Washington and South Carolina.
