Poland extends border controls with Germany and Lithuania until March 2027 over migration risks
Poland extended temporary border checks with Germany and Lithuania until March 30, 2027, citing persistent illegal migration threats. The Ministry of Interior and Administration announced the decision in a regulation published in the Journal of Laws on Friday, expanding controls to 50 locations on the Polish-German border and 13 on the Polish-Lithuanian border.
The ministry justified the extension by ongoing risks of illegal migration from eastern routes via the Baltic states and secondary movements from Germany, where a large number of foreigners with irregular residency status pose migration risks. Since reintroducing controls on July 7, 2025, authorities have checked over 4.5 million people and nearly 2.3 million vehicles, denying entry to nearly 1,300 individuals at the Lithuanian border and 1,200 at the German border.
The regulation also modifies the territorial scope of 13 border crossings with Lithuania and 11 with Germany, including the Rosówek-Rosow crossing, where a nearby bike path was added to the controlled area. Over 118,000 personnel, including Border Guard officers, police, and soldiers, have been involved in the operations on the Lithuanian border, while nearly 211,000 have participated on the German border .
