The Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowa Metropolia is accelerating the integration of its public transport system, prioritizing metropolitan rail and digitalization to cut travel times by 2030, according to a GZM transport official.
Marcin Domański, deputy director of GZM’s Department of Communication and Transport, said the region’s existing network already provides broad accessibility, but travel time remains the top concern for commuters. “People always point to time as the most important factor when choosing transport—before cost, before comfort,” Domański said .
A unified fare system now covers buses, trams, trolleys, Koleje Śląskie, Polregio, and selected PKP Intercity services, with further expansion planned. The next phase focuses on metropolitan rail, aiming for frequencies as high as every 15 minutes, and digital tools—including apps and start-stop tariffs—to improve planning and service quality. A full metropolitan rail model is targeted for 2030.
Infrastructure upgrades, such as the modernization of Katowice’s rail hub, are intended to stabilize schedules by separating long-distance and local tracks. A recent test on the Sosnowiec-Świętochłowice route demonstrated rail’s speed advantage, with Domański describing trains as functioning “like a teleport” for commuters .
