Donald Trump called Norway a “shit house country” and said Norwegian immigrants would not be welcome in the United States because the Nobel committee in Oslo had not awarded him the Peace Prize.
The US president made the remarks at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, days before next week’s midterm elections. He linked his stance to the committee’s decision, saying he would accept immigrants from some countries but “not from Norway because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize… So I don’t want anybody from Norway.”
Trump has previously used the same term for Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. There was no indication the administration was adopting a new policy on Norwegian immigration.
Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide responded on Monday, telling national broadcaster NRK that Trump “knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded them of that, if anyone is wondering, and that is still the case.” His ministry declined to comment further.
Earlier this month, Trump called the failure to award him the prize an “indelible stain” on Norway. This year’s Nobel Peace Prize went to Navi Pillay, a South African judge cited for her work on war crimes and human rights.
Norway remains one of the world’s highest-income countries by GDP per capita, according to IMF data. Its sovereign wealth fund reported a record profit of 1.75 trillion Norwegian crowns ($184.3 billion) for the first half of 2026.
