The 13th stage of the Tour de France, covering 205.8 km from Dole, was the longest of this year's Tour. A large breakaway group of about 50 riders formed, with Mauro Schmid winning the stage ahead of Harold Tejada and Tom Pidcock. Pidcock gained 7 minutes and 36 seconds on the main contenders, moving him from 10th to 4th place in the general classification.
Remco Evenepoel had predicted that the Tour would start on the 13th stage, with no general classification contenders taking risks due to the rain and dangerous roads. However, Pidcock, the leader of the Pinarello Q36.5 team, took the risk and was rewarded with a significant gain.
Pidcock commented on his performance: "When I found myself at the front, a bit by chance, and saw that the guys were collaborating, I decided to go all out. Even though I would have liked to win, the day was very positive."
Tadej Pogacar allowed two of his teammates, Tim Wellens and Brandon McNulty, to join the breakaway. Despite this, Pogacar remains the dominant leader in the general classification.
Pidcock is now 4th in the general classification, 4:15 behind Tadej Pogacar and 0:09 behind Remco Evenepoel. He expects to lose some time in the upcoming time trial on Tuesday: "Even if I have sore legs tomorrow and expect to lose a few minutes in the time trial on Tuesday (26.1 km from Evian-les-Bains to Thonon-les-Bains), I will fight to stay as high as possible."
The 14th stage is set to take place in the Vosges and includes four categorized climbs, including three first-category ascents. The stage is 155.8 km long and starts in Mulhouse, ending at the Markstein ski resort.
Klaas Lodewyck, one of the sports directors of Remco Evenepoel's team, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, stated: "Pidcock will pay the price this weekend. Even though he saved energy by not taking many pulls, spending all day at the front will leave its mark."
