Deutsche Bahn has reported a profit of 147 million euros for the first half of 2026, marking the first time in seven years that the company has been in the black. The announcement comes as the new Federal Minister of Transport, Steffen Bilger, calls for further improvements at the state-owned company, particularly in terms of punctuality.
The profit is a significant turnaround from the loss of 760 million euros reported in the first half of 2025. According to Evelyn Palla, the CEO of Deutsche Bahn, the company has seen a rise in the number of passengers, with 960 million people traveling on the company's trains in the first six months of 2026, an increase of 17 million compared to the same period last year.
Bilger, who met with Palla on Thursday, emphasized the need for further improvements, stating, "I want the Bahn to get better faster, also in terms of punctuality values." The punctuality of long-distance trains remains a concern, with only 59 percent of trains arriving on time in the first half of 2026, a slight decrease from the previous year.
The increase in passenger numbers is partly due to high fuel prices, which have led many commuters to switch from cars to regional trains. Additionally, the company's discount offers, such as the last-minute ticket for seven euros, have proven popular, with 600,000 passengers taking advantage of this offer alone.
Despite the positive financial results, Palla cautioned that there is still work to be done to improve the quality of daily rail services. "I am only satisfied when the quality in daily rail traffic is convincing," she said.
The company's cost-cutting measures, including personnel reductions in the corporate headquarters and internal service providers, have also contributed to the improved financial performance. The operating profit in long-distance traffic reached 148 million euros in the first six months of the year.
Palla has presented a strategy for the next ten years, dubbed "DB 2035," to the supervisory board.
