Declan Rice’s 82nd-minute equalizer secured a 2-2 draw for Arsenal against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, extending the English champions’ unbeaten start to the competition.
The match at Munich’s Allianz Arena began with an early setback for Arsenal when Bukayo Saka was substituted in the 10th minute with a knee injury. His replacement, Eberechi Eze, opened the scoring in the 25th minute, finishing Martin Ødegaard’s long pass after a VAR review overturned an offside call. Bayern responded 10 minutes later through Alphonso Davies, who converted Harry Kane’s precise through ball from deep in his own half.
Kane, facing his former north London club, put Bayern ahead from the penalty spot in the 61st minute after Jurrien Timber handled his shot inside the box. But Arsenal equalized late when Rice exchanged passes with Viktor Gyökeres before slotting past Manuel Neuer, ensuring both sides shared the points.
Bayern, missing key players including Michael Olise, Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala, fielded a depleted side but created chances, with Neuer making a crucial save to deny Bruno Guimarães early in the second half. Kane, who also provided the assist for Davies’ goal, told broadcaster DAZN the draw was a fair result, acknowledging Bayern’s injury absences and the physical nature of the contest.
Arsenal now have seven points from three matches, while Bayern sit on five, with both teams remaining in contention for the top eight places in the league phase. The result marked Bayern’s second consecutive Champions League draw, following their earlier stalemate in the competition.
