Four people died in a head-on collision in Brandenburg on Wednesday evening after a car struck three mopeds while overtaking, police said.

The crash occurred around 7:40 p.m. on Landesstraße 200 between Biesenthal and Wullwinkel in the Barnim district, approximately 40 minutes by car northeast of Berlin’s Alexanderplatz. According to police, the driver attempted to overtake several vehicles and collided with three of four oncoming mopeds. The car then caught fire.

The three moped riders and one passenger sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The fourth moped driver swerved to avoid the car and was unharmed. The car driver was injured and taken to a hospital. Emergency responders, including firefighters and police, arrived at the scene, where the charred vehicle remained overturned in a roadside ditch hours later.

The road was fully closed overnight for recovery and investigation. Crisis counselors and post-incident support teams assisted relatives of the deceased, some of whom arrived at the scene, as well as emergency personnel. Police did not immediately release the ages of those involved, stating that identification of the victims was still underway late Wednesday. A police spokesperson said details would be available Thursday morning .
