Fire at Pakistan hospital nursery kills at least 14 newborns in Islamabad
A fire broke out early Wednesday at a newborn nursery in the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad, killing at least 14 infants, according to hospital officials and the government. The blaze erupted at about 6:45 a.m. local time after the compressor of an air-conditioning unit exploded inside the nursery, which is part of the hospital’s gynecology ward.
Rescue teams extinguished the fire and conducted cooling operations at the site, local media reported. Hospital spokesperson Aneeza Jalil told the BBC that one newborn was rescued from the nursery, which housed at least 15 infants when the fire began. Firefighters and emergency crews evacuated at least 19 people from the hospital, including 10 women, seven children, and two men, according to Geo News.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. In a statement from his office, Sharif called the tragedy “an irreparable loss” and demanded that those responsible be identified and held accountable with the strictest measures.
The fire occurred on the third floor of the hospital, one of the largest government medical facilities in Islamabad. State-run hospitals in Pakistan often face criticism over poor management, underfunding, and overcrowding. Fires in major buildings are not uncommon in the country due to lax safety standards and inadequate enforcement of building codes.
In January, a fire in a shopping mall in the port city of Karachi killed more than 60 people. In 2021, 16 workers died in a factory fire in the same city, and in 2012, at least 250 workers perished in a blaze at a factory in Baldia Town.
