Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed 822 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight across multiple regions, though the figure could not be independently verified.
The drone barrage followed Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian cities. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the capital came under ballistic missile attack late on Aug. 15, with fires reported in the Obolonsky and Holosiivskyi districts. Ukrainian officials said at least one person was killed and seven wounded in Kryvyi Rih, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown, where two industrial sites were hit. Ukraine’s Air Force reported 106 drones and a mix of Oniks, Iskander-M, Kh-59/69, and S-400 missiles launched across the country, with air defenses downing 85 drones and three missiles.
Meanwhile, a Spanish NATO F-18 fighter jet shot down a drone that breached Romanian airspace, the fourth such incident this year. Romania’s Defense Ministry said the drone entered from neighboring Moldova. Defense Minister Radu Miruta called it a “successful mission.”
Ukraine has increasingly targeted Wildberries warehouses, with around 20 facilities struck since mid-July, according to Vorobyov. Zelensky has stated that such strikes aim to undermine Russia’s war economy. On Aug. 15, Ukraine confirmed using domestically produced Flamingo missiles to hit Russia’s Savasleyka military airbase and a Roscosmos facility in Samara Oblast.
