Russian strikes kill child and three others in Kyiv as Ukraine hits refineries in Russia
Russian missile and drone strikes killed at least four people, including a child, in Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight, local officials said on Saturday. In the Brovary district northeast of the capital, two grandparents and their 3-year-old grandson died after multiple drones destroyed their home, while three other family members and a neighbor were hospitalized, according to authorities. A separate strike in Kyiv involving six ballistic missiles killed at least one more person, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
Ukraine’s air force reported Russia launched six Iskander-M ballistic missiles, S-400 surface-to-air missiles, and 151 drones overnight. The military said it downed 135 of the drones but did not intercept any of the ballistic missiles. Falling debris damaged houses, vehicles, and a non-residential building in the Brovary district, sparking fires, Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, wrote on Telegram. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service shared images of blazes engulfing warehouses and garages in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi and Obolon districts.
Zelenskyy arrived in Belgrade on Saturday for his first official visit to Serbia, where he was scheduled to meet President Aleksandar Vučić and Prime Minister Đuro Macut to discuss economic ties, EU relations, and security issues. The trip came as Ukraine sought to bolster international support amid intensifying Russian strikes.
On Friday, the U.S. Senate passed a sweeping new round of sanctions on Russia, targeting Moscow and countries purchasing its oil and natural gas. Zelenskyy welcomed the move on X, calling it a step to “increase pressure” on Russia and end the war. “Real, strong American pressure and sanctions against Russia are what will help the most,” he wrote.
Ukraine also conducted drone strikes on Russian oil infrastructure overnight, hitting the Ilsky refinery in Krasnodar and the Syzran refinery in Samara, according to Ukraine’s General Staff. Fires were reported at both facilities, which the military said supply fuel for Russian military needs. A Russian technical surveillance post on the Sivash drilling platform in the Black Sea was also struck; Ukraine’s Navy said Russia had used the platform to control attack drones and guide strikes on southern Ukrainian cities.
In other regions, Russian shelling killed two people and injured eight in Kharkiv over the past day, while attacks in Donetsk and Kherson oblasts on Wednesday killed three and injured 41, including a child, according to local military administrations.
