Tesla has renamed its advanced driver assistance system in Europe from “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” to “Tesla Assisted Driving” following pressure from Germany’s transport ministry, which deemed the original name misleading. The change appeared on Tesla’s European websites, including those for Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Slovakia, while the U.S. site retains the “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” branding .
German Transport Minister Steffen Bilger stated that the previous name suggested full autonomy, though the system requires constant human supervision. Bilger met with Tesla last month, after which the company proposed the rebranding, according to an official ministry release. He now plans to advocate for EU-wide approval of the renamed system ahead of a potential bloc-wide vote later this year .
Tesla CEO Elon Musk publicly thanked Bilger on X for his role in the process. The company has long sought European approval for its driver assistance software, which it markets as a safety feature for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. The Netherlands became the first EU country to approve the system earlier this year, and eight member states now recognize it, with Slovakia expected to follow within days .
The rebranding does not alter the software’s functionality. German authorities also reached a technical agreement allowing the system to exceed speed limits by up to 10% in certain situations, a compromise intended to support smoother traffic flow .
