Russia warns NATO of nuclear response if Kaliningrad exclave is isolated

Russia has warned NATO it would be ready to use nuclear weapons if the alliance attempts to isolate the Kaliningrad exclave, according to a letter sent to NATO and reported by multiple outlets on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
The Russian embassy in Belgium stated Moscow would use "the entire arsenal of forces and capabilities at its disposal, including nuclear weapons, in order to defend its territory," Reuters reported . The Independent confirmed the letter’s contents, adding that NATO responded directly, denouncing "the threat of force, including any irresponsible nuclear rhetoric" .
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte dismissed the threat on Sept. 30, stating he does not take it seriously and that NATO remains a defensive alliance . Lithuania’s presidential national security aide, Deividas Matulionis, called the threats "completely baseless" and "psychological pressure," according to the Baltic Times . Matulionis condemned the use of force and reaffirmed Lithuania’s continued support for Ukraine.
The warning follows Russian claims that NATO is modeling scenarios to separate Kaliningrad from Russia, a narrative Moscow has repeated this year, according to the Baltic Times and Iltalehti . Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave bordering NATO members Poland and Lithuania, has been a recurring point of tension in Moscow’s rhetoric.
