France froze the assets of Russian journalist Xenia Fedorova for six months on Friday, escalating measures against her after an expulsion order was issued earlier this week. The French Ministry of Economy and Finance said the freeze aims to prevent “new acts of interference,” complementing the Interior Ministry’s expulsion decision announced Wednesday .
Fedorova, 46, is the former head of RT France, the Kremlin-backed outlet now banned in France. She currently contributes to French media owned by Vincent Bolloré, including CNews, Europe 1 radio, and *Le Journal du Dimanche*. Her lawyer called the asset freeze illegal and an attack on free expression, describing it as part of the government’s “harassment” of his client .
In her first public response, Fedorova accused President Emmanuel Macron’s government of censorship and political pressure. She claimed the expulsion and asset freeze were efforts to silence opinions that “do not align with the official narrative” .
The expulsion order, issued by the Paris Prefecture of Police on July 29, remains under appeal by Fedorova’s legal team, though it does not block immediate enforcement. France has no direct flights to Russia, complicating her potential deportation. Macron has previously labeled her a Russian agent, and the centrist Renew group in the European Parliament has called for sanctions over her reporting on Ukraine and the EU .
Fedorova’s residence permit was renewed for 10 years in 2024 despite her known pro-Kremlin activities. She is also banned from entering Germany. The French government’s actions follow years of alleged Russian interference in French elections, part of what officials describe as Moscow’s hybrid warfare strategy .
