Ukraine accused SpaceX of restricting Starlink satellite services on Wednesday, hampering drone operations as Russian missile strikes intensified. Ukrainian officials reported speed limits of 160 km/h on moving terminals, disrupting interceptor and strike missions, with no prior warning from SpaceX or U.S. partners.

Elon Musk responded on X, stating that Starshield—the military-grade system used by Ukraine—is controlled by the U.S. government. “Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government. Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS,” he wrote, referring to President Donald Trump. Musk distinguished Starshield from commercial Starlink, which he said is restricted to civilian or defensive use.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the restrictions a “big mistake” that would cost lives, while his advisers pressed the White House for answers. A senior U.S. official denied involvement, but Ukrainian officials linked the timing to Trump’s recent demand that Kyiv halt strikes on Russian oil refineries. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski publicly questioned Musk’s motives, writing on X: “Hey, big man, are you playing politics with your products again?”

Service was partially restored by Wednesday evening, but Ukrainian forces reported persistent connectivity issues at high speeds. Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov urged the full removal of Starshield’s speed limits, calling it “critical for Ukraine’s defense.” The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
