Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged Israel on Friday to halt and reverse the “forced establishment” of settlements in the West Bank, according to a statement from China’s foreign ministry.

Wang made the remarks during a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Baku, Azerbaijan, where both were attending the Seventh Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia. Wang emphasized that China views the Palestinian issue as “the greatest historical injustice of this century” and reiterated support for a two-state solution as the path to resolution.

He also stressed that the immediate priority should be fully opening humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip to prevent a “catastrophe” from spreading. Wang added that China is prepared to collaborate with the international community to push all parties toward dialogue and a political settlement.

Wang is attending the summit as the special representative of Chinese President Xi Jinping, China’s state news agency Xinhua reported.
