Trump also announced plans to double tariffs on Canadian vehicles to 50% starting Jan. 1, writing on Truth Social that Canada had “ripped off” the U.S. for years with high tariffs on American agricultural products .
Canada’s countermeasures include a 7.5 billion Canadian dollar ($4.6 billion) support package for affected businesses and workers, with aid for small and medium enterprises, liquidity support and assistance for employees at risk due to the new tariffs .
Prime Minister Mark Carney accused Washington of attempting to subordinate Canada, stating that U.S. demands during the failed talks aimed to “destroy our major industries.” Carney also rejected U.S. pressure to drop bilingual labeling requirements, declaring that French is “non-negotiable” .
Trump escalated tensions further by suggesting the U.S. might rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” a proposal that drew immediate criticism from Canadian officials .
Ontario Premier Doug Ford told The Associated Press he was prepared to escalate by cutting off electricity and critical mineral shipments to the U.S. if the dispute continued .
