NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, U.S. Air Force Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, warned Russia on Monday that any attack on the alliance would be “utterly futile,” as European leaders rejected a U.S.-brokered energy ceasefire with Moscow. Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum, Grynkewich said NATO was prepared to “block, blunt and break” any Russian aggression, adding that the alliance’s forces would “destroy everything” if attacked .
Grynkewich also linked Russia’s hybrid attacks—including sabotage and arson across NATO member states—to its broader campaign to undermine Western support for Ukraine, urging a stronger response. He emphasized that such acts should be met with increased weapons deliveries to Kyiv, including through a U.S. purchase scheme that has already drawn nearly $5.5 billion in pledges .
European leaders, meanwhile, dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Moscow had already violated the purported truce, with strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure reported hours after Trump’s announcement . The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, underscored the bloc’s stance, stating, “Russia is killing more civilians than ever,” as Brussels imposed its largest sanctions expansion to date—nearly 1,600 new listings targeting Russia’s military-industrial complex .
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Lithuania’s Prime Minister Mindauga Šimelytė called for tougher measures, with Šimelytė urging Ukraine to strike more Russian data centers to protect European elections from interference . NATO’s new “Theory of Victory” strategy, outlined by Grynkewich, details a three-phase response—block, blunt, break—to deter and defeat any Russian assault .
