Russian authorities have quarantined a hospital in Shelekhov and are monitoring nearly 200 contacts of a 28-year-old laboratory technician who died last week after contracting pneumonia of “unknown etiology,” officials confirmed on Monday. The woman, identified by local media as Darya Shipilova, worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East in Irkutsk, southeastern Siberia.

Rospotrebnadzor, Russia’s public health watchdog, stated that extensive testing found no microorganisms linked to her professional activities and denied any laboratory incidents involving pathogens. Governor Igor Kobzev said all contacts are under medical supervision, describing the case as a suspected “particularly dangerous infection.” The Shelekhov District Hospital, where she died, remains under quarantine, with admissions and discharges halted, though its outpatient clinic continues operating, according to Mayor Maxim Modin.

U.S. and European officials are closely monitoring the situation. President Donald Trump said the United States is prepared to offer assistance, calling the disease “rough” and noting that microbes have “gotten stronger.” The World Health Organization stated that the public health risk to the general population appears low based on unofficial information, while the European Commission said it is tracking developments “very closely.” Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan have introduced enhanced sanitary controls at their borders.

Rospotrebnadzor reported that among the woman’s contacts, two tested positive for rhinovirus and two for COVID-19, with all others negative. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov urged the public to rely on official statements, as local media and some regional officials initially suggested pneumonic plague before editing or deleting their reports.
