Romanian political crisis deepens as AUR rules out backing Veștea government, PNL fractures over leadership ultimatum
Romania’s political crisis intensified on Sunday as the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) publicly rejected any cooperation with the proposed government of Adrian Veștea, while the ruling National Liberal Party (PNL) descended into open rebellion after its leadership demanded the resignation of five prominent members aligned with the premier-designate.
AUR leader Petrișor Peiu told *Adevărul* that his party would not provide the votes needed to confirm Veștea’s government, accusing the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of misleading voters about its parliamentary support. “I’m sorry that PSD is deceiving its voters to this extent,” Peiu said, adding that AUR would not be drawn into what it described as the “war between PNL’s userism and PSD’s Nicușorism.”
The rejection from AUR comes as Veștea’s supporters within PNL escalated their defiance of party leadership. A group of 23 PNL members, including former Secretary-General Lucian Bode, issued a 12-point rebuttal to an ultimatum from party president Ilie Bolojan, accusing the leadership of political persecution and demanding an end to what they called an internal “lynching.”
Bode, one of the five targeted by Bolojan’s demand for resignation, took to social media to reject the ultimatum outright. “I will not resign,” he stated, arguing that his public support for Veștea did not violate any party decision. “This new liberal vision begins with ultimatums and ends with threats of expulsion for those who dare to hold a different opinion,” Bode wrote, calling the move “deplorable and laughable.”
PNL deputy Alina Gorghiu joined the chorus of dissent, calling Bolojan’s decision “abusive” and accusing him of fearing a liberal prime minister. “He is afraid that a liberal premier could be invested in Parliament,” she said, framing the internal purge as an attempt to stifle dissent within the party.
The turmoil follows a dramatic weekend congress in which Bolojan’s faction consolidated control, prompting the backlash from Veștea’s supporters. Robert Sighiartău, newly elected PNL Secretary-General, framed the internal conflict as a systemic struggle, telling *Digi24* that “the system is afraid of Ilie Bolojan” and that PNL’s mission was to ensure irreversible change.
With AUR’s refusal to back Veștea’s government and PNL’s internal divisions deepening, the path to parliamentary investiture appears increasingly narrow. The crisis underscores the fragility of Romania’s governing coalition and raises questions about the sustainability of Veștea’s premiership without cross-party support.
