A Flydubai Boeing 737 MAX 8 from Dubai to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday after the Omani co-pilot stabbed the Indian captain, Smit Machchhar, in an apparent attempt to crash the plane, Israeli and airline officials said.
Passengers and off-duty pilots intervened after Machchhar, despite his injuries, opened the cockpit door, allowing them to subdue the attacker and stabilize the aircraft, which had plunged sharply, tearing part of its tail. Two Flydubai pilots aboard the flight then landed the plane safely with 174 people on board.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced on Thursday that four passengers—Yaniv Hayoun, Tzvika Mans, Asaf Rajuan and Dr. Shota Musayev—would be decorated for their “extraordinary courage in an impossible situation.” Herzog also praised Machchhar, saying, “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your courage, determination and actions that saved many lives,” and wished him a full recovery .
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the co-pilot, now detained in Saudi Arabia, had undergone radical Islamist indoctrination and was suicidal, though he cautioned it was too early to confirm Iranian involvement . UAE and Saudi authorities are investigating, with Israel participating in the interrogation.
Flydubai suspended flights to and from Israel pending the probe. The passengers later arrived in Tel Aviv on a separate flight, where they were greeted by cheering relatives .
