The global AI race intensified this week as Mistral and OpenAI unveiled new models, while Amazon warned that U.S. data center moratoriums could undermine America’s competitive edge.
French AI company Mistral introduced a new model on Oct. 6, which it claims outperforms some Chinese competitors in selected areas, marking Europe’s latest push to reduce reliance on U.S. and Chinese AI dominance. The release follows a five-month gap between major updates and underscores Europe’s strategic ambition to avoid vulnerabilities tied to foreign AI dependence . Mistral also promoted its new model, “Le Chonk,” as the best open-weight offering outside of China .
Meanwhile, OpenAI released 722 manuscripts on Oct. 6, covering solutions to 372 families of long-standing mathematical problems generated by an unreleased frontier model. The batch includes summaries of the model’s reasoning and compute estimates, with OpenAI stating the average result used the equivalent of three hours of ChatGPT Pro processing time .
Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman warned on Oct. 7 that over 100 proposed U.S. moratoriums on new data centers could threaten the country’s AI leadership. Garman argued that restricting data center construction would hinder computing capacity expansion, critical for AI development. Amazon also pledged over $1 billion over five years to communities hosting its data centers to address local concerns .
