Ukraine launched one of its largest aerial attacks of the war overnight, striking targets deep inside Russia and killing at least six people in the Belgorod region, according to local officials. Acting Governor Alexander Shuvaev said the missile strike hit the village of Koloskovo, injuring four others, including a 14-year-old child . The attack followed a previous night of strikes that Russian officials called the "largest-scale" this year, which killed at least seven people.
Ukrainian forces have intensified drone and missile strikes on Russian logistics and military-industrial sites in recent weeks. Russia retaliated with its own strikes, including a drone attack that destroyed a Nova Poshta branch in Kramatorsk, killing one employee and injuring four others . Russian forces also launched an unspecified number of Onyx anti-ship missiles, Iskander-M/S-400/KN-23 ballistic missiles, and Kh-59/69 cruise missiles, along with 106 drones, against Ukraine overnight, according to the ISW .
The European Union is preparing its largest sanctions package against Russia since the start of the war, with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas proposing to increase the number of sanctioned Russian individuals and entities by one-third . Kallas described it as "the most ambitious sanctions list since the beginning of the war" in remarks to German media .
On the ground, Ukraine reported 236 combat engagements on Sunday, with the highest concentration of attacks in Pokrovsk, where 33 engagements occurred. Russian losses included 1,440 troops, tanks, drones, and vehicles, according to a Ukrainian military update . Neither side made confirmed territorial advances on August 16, the ISW noted .
