Russian forces launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv and its surrounding region early on Aug. 20, killing at least 12 people and injuring 33 others, according to Ukrainian officials.
Explosions struck multiple districts, including Sviatoshynskyi, Solomianskyi and Shevchenkivskyi, with a nine-story residential building collapsing and catching fire in Solomianskyi, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram. A children’s hospital in the same district sustained damage, with windows shattered and cars burning on its grounds, while another residential building left people trapped, he added. Parts of Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts lost electricity.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported at least 12 attack sites across Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts, with fires in residential buildings and warehouses. Rescuers pulled at least two survivors from rubble, the service said. In the Brovary district of the broader Kyiv region, one person was killed and another wounded, with an industrial facility damaged, according to Kyiv region Governor Tymur Tkachenko.
The attack lasted over eight hours, with the all-clear sounding at 8:36 a.m., Klitschko said. He declared Aug. 21 a day of mourning in Kyiv, with flags at municipal buildings to fly at half-mast. Ukraine’s air force warned of Russian Kalibr and Zircon missiles heading toward the capital during the assault.
Neighboring NATO members responded to the strikes. Poland’s military command mobilized aircraft and activated air defenses to protect its airspace near the Ukrainian border. Romania’s defense ministry said a drone entered its airspace near Galați before crashing in an uninhabited area, triggering a brief air alert. Two Spanish jets on NATO missions and a Romanian helicopter were scrambled in response.
Moscow’s defense ministry claimed its strikes targeted facilities producing drone components, a military depot and a logistics hub. Meanwhile, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 250 drones were launched toward the Moscow region overnight, with 28 destroyed in the area.
