Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer, has removed the product tag "Everything for the SMO" from its website and app following Ukrainian drone attacks on its warehouses.
The tag, which referred to products related to Russia's "special military operation" in Ukraine, previously listed over 200,000 items. Attempts to search for this tag now return a "No matching products found" message. However, military-purpose products remain available on the platform. Body armor and protective helmets can be found in the Sport section, while FPV drones and components are listed under TV, Audio, Photo and Video Equipment. Other search terms such as "SMO products" or "SMO kit" still bring up military first-aid kits, radios, backpacks, chevrons, and flags.
Since July 18, Ukrainian forces have struck at least 10 Wildberries logistics centers, including warehouses in Elektrostal, Kotovsk, Koledino, Krasnodar, Nevinnomyssk, Voronezh, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, and occupied Simferopol. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that these facilities were used "to supply the Russian army with drone components, navigation equipment and gear."
The attacks have resulted in significant damage to Wildberries' logistics capacity. According to DroneBomber, over 1.15 million square meters of warehouse space have been damaged or destroyed out of a total of 5.6 million square meters. The company, which accounts for almost 50% of Russia’s online retail market, has been severely impacted by the strikes.
In response to the attacks, Wildberries has updated its terms for sellers to disclaim liability for goods lost in drone attacks. Other major Russian online marketplaces like Megamarket and Ozon have made similar changes.
The European Union has imposed sanctions on Wildberries' banking arm for its financial contribution to the Russian budget. The EU's 21st package of sanctions against Russia includes measures against companies affiliated with Wildberries.
Wildberries plays a significant role in Russia's consumer economy. The company's co-founder, Tatyana Kim, is the wealthiest woman in Russia with an estimated fortune of $8.1 billion.
The attacks on Wildberries warehouses are part of a broader campaign by Ukrainian forces to disrupt Russian army logistics and supply chains. The company's logistics centers have been targeted repeatedly, with incidents reported in various regions including St. Petersburg, Tver, Moscow Oblast, and Voronezh, as well as in Russian-occupied Crimea.
According to reports, the strikes may have cost Wildberries billions in damage. The company has not released an official statement on the financial impact of the attacks.
