Bulgaria’s National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology issued yellow and orange weather alerts for heavy rain and strong winds across most of the country on Tuesday, Oct. 13, with only Sofia City, Sofia Province, Pernik, Kyustendil and Blagoevgrad under a low-risk green alert. A first-degree yellow warning covers 17 regions, 16 for heavy rainfall and one for both rain and strong winds, while a second-degree orange alert applies to seven regions: Varna, Burgas, Shumen, Yambol, Haskovo, Kardzhali and Smolyan, with four facing significant rainfall and three at risk from both rain and strong winds.

A moderate northerly wind is expected nationwide, strengthening temporarily in the eastern half. Temperatures will remain steady, with highs of 10°C to 15°C and around 11°C in Sofia. Mountain areas will experience cloudy, windy and rainy conditions, with snow expected above 1,700 meters. Significant precipitation is forecast in the Central Balkan, Rhodope, Strandzha and Sakar regions, with temperatures reaching about 6°C at 1,200 meters and around 1°C at 2,000 meters. The Black Sea coast will see cloudy, rainy and windy weather, with substantial rainfall in some areas during the afternoon. Winds will blow from the north at moderate speeds, occasionally becoming strong, with maximum temperatures of 15°C to 17°C and sea water temperatures of 20°C to 21°C.

Mostly cloudy skies will persist across much of Bulgaria on Wednesday, with rain continuing in parts of the south and east. Precipitation will be lighter and gradually subside, with winds from the north-northwest light to moderate, occasionally strengthening in eastern areas. Temperatures will remain low for mid-October, with minimums of 3°C to 8°C and maximums of 11°C to 16°C. Rain is expected to stop throughout the country overnight into Thursday, with cloud cover decreasing and sunny conditions returning to many areas, although eastern Bulgaria will remain windy. Daytime temperatures are forecast to rise slightly .
