TEHRAN — Three of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s sons stood in prayer beside his coffin on Sunday as tens of thousands of mourners filled Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla Grand Mosque for the second day of state funeral rites, but the new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, remained conspicuously absent from public view.

State television broadcast images of Mostafa, Meysam and Masoud Khamenei praying behind the coffins of their father and four other family members laid out in the vast courtyard of the sprawling religious complex. The remains of Ayatollah Khamenei, his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and 14-month-old granddaughter were displayed under glass, draped in the Iranian flag. The funeral prayers were led by Grand Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani, 97, one of the Islamic Republic’s most influential clerics, as soldiers, seminary students and ordinary citizens filed past the coffins waving flags emblazoned with slogans vowing revenge against the United States and Israel .

Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father after the February 28 airstrike that killed the 86-year-old leader, has not appeared in public since the attack that also wounded him, leaving his condition and whereabouts unclear. People close to his inner circle told Reuters that his face was disfigured and he suffered significant leg injuries in the strike, which was carried out by the United States and Israel at the start of a weeks-long conflict that ended in a fragile ceasefire . One mourner, a young woman interviewed by the semi-official Tasnim news agency, expressed disappointment at his absence. “Until the last moment, before the prayer began, I kept telling those around me that I hoped (Mojtaba Khamenei) himself would come,” she said. “That was our only wish.”

The week-long funeral processions, which began on Saturday, are designed to showcase public devotion to the state and revolutionary zeal, with the Islamic Republic transporting Khamenei’s remains to Shi’ite religious sites in neighboring Iraq. The ceremonies have drawn high-ranking officials, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqher Ghalibaf, and Esmail Qaani, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ Quds Force. Foreign dignitaries such as Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also attended the state ceremony on Saturday .

Amid the mourning, fiery rhetoric echoed through the mosque. Mourners chanted slogans calling for the death of U.S. President Donald Trump, who has vowed to retaliate against any Iranian attempt on his life. An eulogist at the funeral explicitly called for Trump’s assassination, according to Euronews . The funeral rites, which have drawn millions of participants, are set to continue for six days, with the main procession scheduled for Monday.

The absence of Mojtaba Khamenei has fueled speculation about his health and the stability of Iran’s leadership transition. Since his appointment, he has communicated only through written messages read publicly, and his continued seclusion raises questions about the succession process within the theocratic system. The funeral’s scale and the regime’s emphasis on unity underscore the Islamic Republic’s determination to project strength despite the loss of its longtime leader.
