Trump and Xi end Washington state visit with AI accord and trade truce extension
President Donald Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping for a three-day state visit in Washington, concluding Friday with a planned tour of the National Archives. The visit included a state dinner at the White House on Thursday, where both leaders delivered speeches emphasizing strengthened bilateral ties despite differing systems.
Trump described the meeting as “very productive,” stating on Truth Social that “tremendous things will be happening” between the U.S. and China. He noted consensus on renaming artificial intelligence to “super intelligence,” a term Xi reportedly endorsed. The leaders also discussed security and emerging technologies, with Trump asserting that decisions on these issues could shape peace and prosperity for decades .
Xi arrived Wednesday with his wife, Peng Liyuan, and was greeted with a 21-gun salute and military flyover at Joint Base Andrews. Protesters chanting “Free Hong Kong” and “Free Tibet” were heard near the White House during the welcome. The state dinner featured high-profile guests, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, AMD CEO Lisa Su, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos, underscoring the focus on AI and technology .
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said details on trade progress would be released Monday, while a two-month extension of the tariff truce was confirmed. Xi reiterated China’s opposition to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, calling it a “red line,” though Trump did not publicly address the issue .
