A 19-year-old man was arrested in connection with a shooting at Virginia State University that left five people wounded, authorities said on Saturday.
The shooting occurred around 1:28 a.m. local time near the university’s Quad Annexes dormitories in Ettrick, Virginia, about 24 miles south of Richmond. Police found five people with gunshot wounds outside the residence halls and transported them to hospitals, according to Chesterfield County Police and university statements .
One victim remained in critical condition, while the other four suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said . The university confirmed that at least one of the wounded was a student, while the others were not affiliated with the school .
The suspect was identified as Cameron Harris, 19, of Henrico, Virginia, who is not a student at the university, according to WTVR . Authorities secured eight arrest warrants against Harris, including charges of malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was jailed without bond in Chesterfield County, and additional charges may follow as the investigation continues .
The university initially reported that multiple suspects were involved and urged the campus community to avoid the area. The campus was temporarily locked down before reopening later Saturday. Virginia State University Police, Chesterfield County Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are investigating .
The shooting occurred just before the start of the academic year. Residence halls had opened the previous week, and classes were scheduled to begin on Monday. Virginia State University, a historically Black institution founded in 1882, enrolls approximately 5,700 students . The university had held a welcome ceremony for new students on Friday, hours before the shooting .
