Luxembourg Airport suspends flights after unauthorized drones detected over airfield
Luxembourg Airport temporarily suspended flight operations on Friday, Sept. 18, after unauthorized drones were detected near and over the airfield, airport authorities announced on Saturday. The precautionary measure was taken to ensure the safety of passengers, crews, ground personnel, and aircraft, according to the airport administration .
Operations resumed on Saturday morning, but authorities warned of potential delays as airlines and ground services worked to restore normal schedules. The airport operator stated it was monitoring the situation in coordination with national civil aviation regulators, law enforcement, and air traffic control agencies .
Luxembourg’s government confirmed an investigation is underway after the visual sighting of unidentified drones over Findel Airport. A total of 19 flights were diverted to nearby airports, including Brussels, Paris, and Frankfurt, affecting over 1,800 passengers, according to national carrier Luxair .
Prime Minister Luc Frieden said authorities had observed the presence of “potentially larger drones” in Luxembourg’s airspace in recent days. A crisis meeting was held with defense and interior ministers, and the government is analyzing the situation in collaboration with NATO partners .
The airport and government did not disclose the origin or operators of the drones, citing ongoing security assessments. An interministerial evaluation cell was convened to review the incident and determine further measures .
