Luxembourg Airport temporarily suspended flight operations on Friday evening after unauthorized drones were detected in its airspace, the government said in a statement on Saturday.
The suspension followed the visual sighting of unidentified and unapproved drones over Findel, the airport’s location. A total of 19 flights were diverted to other airports, and operations resumed at approximately 1:20 a.m. local time on Saturday, according to the government.
Prime Minister Luc Frieden described the incident as “something new for Luxembourg,” noting the presence of “potentially larger drones” in the country’s airspace in recent days. He added that authorities are analyzing collected information and conducting checks in close cooperation with international partners. The government stated that current information does not allow for definitive conclusions about the incident’s origin or intent.
Luxembourg is coordinating with NATO partners to investigate the event, Frieden said during a press conference. The airport’s operator previously stated the suspension was a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers, crews, ground personnel, and aircraft.
A special interministerial unit has been established to assess drone-related threats, with ongoing information exchange between Luxembourg and neighboring countries. The government emphasized it is monitoring the situation and remains prepared to ensure public safety.
