Russia launched a devastating overnight barrage of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones against Kyiv on Monday, killing at least ten people and wounding dozens as the assault entered its fourth hour, Ukrainian authorities said. The attack, the second on the capital in less than a week, reduced apartment buildings to smouldering rubble, trapped residents under collapsed floors and sent thousands fleeing to metro stations for shelter.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration, said a residential block in the Podilskyi district partially collapsed between the fifth and ninth floors after a direct hit, with emergency crews still pulling survivors from the wreckage. “These are residential buildings,” Tkachenko wrote on Telegram. “Places where people slept and lived their ordinary lives.” In the Darnytsia district, several multi-storey buildings were damaged and people were believed trapped under the rubble. By dawn, officials confirmed nine deaths and 46 injuries within the city limits, with at least one further fatality in the Bucha district northwest of Kyiv. The toll was expected to rise as rescue operations continued.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said air defences were active throughout the night and urged residents to remain in shelters. “Nine deaths and 46 wounded have now been confirmed,” Tkachenko posted. “Sadly, this is not the final toll. Rescue operations are still ongoing.” The State Emergency Service reported that at least 15 residential buildings across the capital sustained damage or destruction, while power outages were reported in the Sofiivska Borshchahivka suburb west of the city.
The assault began shortly after 01:40 local time with waves of strikes at 01:40, 02:10 and 03:15, according to journalists on the ground and local media. Air raid sirens sounded across almost all of Ukraine’s regions, and thousands of Kyiv residents sought refuge in underground metro stations as the Ukrainian Air Force warned of dozens of incoming missiles. Poland’s Air Force scrambled fighter jets to protect its own airspace in response to the missile launches. The all-clear was given in Kyiv just after 05:00, but air raid sirens sounded again around 08:00 due to Russian attack drones over the capital.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned hours earlier that a large-scale Russian attack on the city was imminent, citing intelligence reports. In a late-night post on Telegram, he renewed calls for Western partners to bolster Ukraine’s air defences, particularly by supplying more Patriot missiles. “Failing to replenish them only emboldens Russia to prolong its four-year war,” Zelenskyy said. The attack comes as both sides have intensified long-range strikes in recent weeks, underscoring the expanding geographical reach of a conflict now in its fifth year.
The assault follows a deadly strike on 2-3 July that killed at least 30 civilians and wounded 91, damaging or destroying over 130 buildings including at least 20 educational institutions. Kyiv’s mayor reported hazardous air pollution spikes in the aftermath, while search operations continued for ten people reported missing.
