Russian drone strikes kill seven in Kharkiv Oblast as Moscow intensifies aerial campaign
Russian drone and missile strikes across Ukraine’s Kharkiv Oblast on the night of 8–9 June killed at least seven people and wounded 44, regional authorities reported on Tuesday, as Moscow intensified its aerial campaign against northern and southern frontlines.
In the regional capital, Kharkiv city, overnight attacks left three dead and 18 injured, the city’s mayor Ihor Terekhov said. Governor Oleh Syniehubov confirmed a separate strike in the nearby town of Chuhuiv had killed three more and left six wounded. A third incident in the same oblast struck a waste-storage facility near Chernobyl, though authorities did not immediately report casualties at the site. The Ukrainian air force said it intercepted 18 of 23 incoming drones over Kharkiv Oblast, but falling debris and missile fragments still caused widespread damage to homes and power lines .
Further south, Russian forces launched 884 strikes on 46 settlements in Zaporizhzhia Oblast over the past 24 hours, killing two civilians and injuring 38, local officials said. In occupied southern Ukraine, Ukrainian drones have severed supply routes to the Kinburn Isthmus, a Russian-held salient since 2022, leaving Moscow’s forces without ammunition, fuel and food, according to the Ukrainian Unian news agency .
The escalation coincides with new financial pressure on Kyiv. On Monday the European Union disbursed an additional €2.8 billion in macro-financial assistance, bringing total EU support this year to more than €18 billion. Yet the aid arrives as Russia’s own logistics buckle under Ukrainian drone strikes: the Kremlin’s energy ministry acknowledged “temporary difficulties” with fuel supplies after Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries and rail links .
Analysts warn Moscow is rapidly closing the drone gap. “Ukraine’s current edge is temporary,” noted one defence commentator on social media. “Once Russia deploys AI-strike drones at scale, logistics within 100 km of the front will face destruction.” Ukrainian forces are racing to deploy anti-drone nets, vehicle cages and underground tunnels, while European governments are urged to accelerate air-defence deliveries .
President Volodymyr Zelensky used the uptick in violence to renew calls for Washington to re-engage in peace talks, telling US negotiators on Monday that only sustained Western pressure could force Moscow to the table .
