Curry first gained fame as Frank-N-Furter in *The Rocky Horror Show*, which premiered in 1973 at London’s Royal Court Theatre. He reprised the role on Broadway and in the 1975 film adaptation, a cult classic that remains a staple of midnight screenings. The character, a cross-dressing mad scientist, became his most iconic, with Curry later describing his approach to the role as a risk worth taking . The film’s enduring popularity led to Broadway revivals, including a 2026 production starring Luke Evans, who paid tribute to Curry on Instagram, calling him “a bright fierce flame” .
Beyond *Rocky Horror*, Curry built a career as a versatile character actor. He earned three Tony nominations for Broadway roles in *Spamalot*, *My Favorite Year*, and *Amadeus*, and a Primetime Emmy nod in 1994. His film credits include Pennywise in the 1990 miniseries *It*, Wadsworth in *Clue* (1985), Long John Silver in *Muppet Treasure Island* (1996), and the concierge in *Home Alone 2: Lost in New York* (1992). He also appeared in *The Hunt for Red October* (1990) and *The Three Musketeers* (1993) .
Born in Cheshire, England, on April 19, 1946, Curry began his professional career in a 1968 West End production of *Hair* after graduating from the University of Birmingham. He later performed in works by Shakespeare, Brecht, and Tom Stoppard before *Rocky Horror* catapulted him to international recognition. Following his 2012 stroke, he transitioned to voice acting while continuing to receive accolades, including a lifetime achievement award at the 2015 Tony Awards .
Tributes poured in from colleagues and fans. Evans, who played Frank-N-Furter in the latest *Rocky Horror* revival, wrote on Instagram that Curry’s legacy lived on in the role’s enduring appeal . Curry’s manager, Hurwitz, stated he died surrounded by those closest to him .
