Isabel Allende won the 2026 Premio Planeta on Thursday night in Barcelona for her novel *La hora antes del alba*, the sequel to *La casa de los espíritus*. The announcement came during a gala at the Fira de Barcelona’s Montjuïc pavilion, presided over by Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. Allende, who submitted the work under the pseudonym Luz Ventura, called the victory “like winning the Nobel” and said she entered the contest as a challenge, comparing it to “getting married at 80.”

The novel centers on Alba, the granddaughter of Esteban Trueba and Clara del Valle, who returns pregnant to her family home after being tortured and imprisoned under a dictatorship. Allende said she revived the saga now because “I see so many democracias threatened by authoritarianism and even fascism, I feel the same fear that made me leave my country after the 1973 coup.” The jury, including Luz Gabás and Pere Gimferrer, praised it as “a historical fiction of overcoming about a family struggling to survive in a turbulent place” .

The prize, marking its 75th anniversary, carries a €1 million award. Allende, previously published by Plaza & Janés, will now move to Planeta, the award’s organizer. The finalists included Sergio Hernández for *La añoranza*, a detective novel set in 1959 Barcelona .
