At least six people were killed and 21 injured after two earthquakes struck a mountainous region of Peru on Saturday night, officials said Sunday. Meanwhile, Venezuela's National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez announced that the death toll from last month's twin earthquakes has climbed to 5,119, with more than 16,700 injuries reported.

The quakes in Peru, measuring magnitudes 5.1 and 3.7, hit Chupaca province in the Junín region, about 300 kilometers east of Lima, according to Peru's National Seismological Center. The first quake struck at a depth of 24 kilometers and the second at 18 kilometers, the center said. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre earlier reported that the first earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6.

The earthquakes caused significant damage in the town of Chongos Bajo, where several buildings collapsed or suffered structural damage, including the historic “Santiago de León” church and former convent, built in 1565 and designated as a national heritage site. Images broadcast by local media showed residents huddled under blankets outside severely damaged homes, with animals also seen under the rubble.

Luis Vásquez, head of Peru's National Civil Defense Institute, told local radio station Exitosa that preliminary reports showed about 48 homes had been destroyed and another 18 damaged, affecting around 300 people who are being provided with tents. "Homes in the affected communities in Chupaca are generally rudimentary structures built from adobe blocks," Vásquez said.

“My home has been destroyed,” Hermenegilda Guamalato told a local radio station as she sought a place to stay with her three children in the neighboring province of Huayucachi.

Vásquez added that emergency crews and firefighters arrived in the affected areas early Sunday to clear debris amid concerns that additional victims could be trapped under the rubble.

In Venezuela, the death toll from the June 24 twin earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 has risen to 5,119, with 17,907 people displaced, according to established reports. The earthquakes caused widespread destruction, damaging 856 buildings, including 190 that collapsed completely. Venezuela has received $346 million from the International Monetary Fund to support recovery efforts.

Peru lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone that accounts for roughly 85% of the world's seismic activity. Earthquakes are frequent in the region, with a magnitude 7.9 earthquake striking the province of Pisco in the Ica region in 2007, killing nearly 600 people.
