Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve told CNN that 42,000 people had been forced to evacuate, with an additional 45,000 under orders to prepare to leave. All but one school in Washoe County, where Reno is located, will remain closed on Monday, authorities said . The fire was burning 8 kilometers northwest of Reno, a metropolitan area of over 280,000 people, according to 2025 census data.
No deaths have been reported, but at least six people have been injured, including three first responders, and several mountaintop homes have been destroyed, local media reported. Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County, stating the fire "is spreading quickly and threatening homes and structures" .
Local Fire Chief Richard Edwards warned of the fire’s volatility, driven by unpredictable winds. "The Hawk Fire is a very dynamic incident for us as it's being driven by the winds. The wind-driven fires move very rapidly into our residential areas," he said. "If you have been told to evacuate, please don't wait!" .
Around 800 personnel, including crews from Australia and New Zealand, are supporting firefighting efforts, according to a local fire rescue service. The cause of the fire was described as "human-caused," though officials did not specify how it started .
In Europe, wildfires continued to strain resources. Serbia requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, prompting the deployment of rescEU helicopters from Czechia, Romania, and Slovakia, as well as ground teams from Germany and Romania . Meanwhile, new EU data revealed that the number of professional firefighters in Europe fell by 18,000 in the worst year on record for wildfires, including a reduction of over 4,000 in France .
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Armed Forces deployed helicopters to combat fires in Trebinje and Cazin, dumping over 40,000 liters of water in one operation alone. Fifteen ground personnel remained on standby in Cazin, while 22 others have been fighting fires in Nevesinje since August 13 .
Reno, located near the California border and the Lake Tahoe tourist area, faces ongoing threats as crews work to contain the blaze. The fire’s rapid spread and wind-driven nature have complicated suppression efforts, with zero percent containment reported as of Sunday .

El incendio forestal que se ha declarado este mediodía en Villalcampo (Zamora), en las inmediaciones del parque natural Arribes del Duero, se ha extendido en dirección noreste y ha obligado a cortar las carreteras Nacional 122 y la ZA-324 y a confinar la población de Ricobayo, de algo menos de 150 habitantes. El fuego se ha extendido con rapidez y ha hecho que se haya activado el nivel dos de peligrosidad de incendios, el máximo establecido en el plan Infocal del operativo de extinción de Castilla y León, por la amenaza para poblaciones y bienes, según han informado fuentes de los medios de extinción y del servicio de Emergencias 1-1-2 de Castilla y León. Sobre las tres de la tarde, la Junta de Castilla y León ha informado de la mejora del flanco izquierdo. El flanco derecho mantiene su actividad, aunque ha bajado la intensidad del fuego. Además, se ha ralentizado el avance en cabeza del incendio y los trabajos de los equipos terrestres están resultando efectivos. Ese nivel dos en el Índice de Gravedad Potencial de Incendios se estableció cerca de una hora después de iniciarse el incendio y quince minutos más tarde se decretó el confinamiento de la población de Ricobayo, tanto por la afección del humo como de las llamas, y el corte de la carretera Nacional 122 a la altura de esa localidad y de la ZA-324 que comunica las localidades de Ricobayo y Villalcampo. En los trabajos de extinción participan seis medios aéreos, junto a once cuadrillas, cinco de ellas helitransportadas, tres autobombas, tres retenes de maquinaria, tres dotaciones de bomberos, cuatro agentes medioambientales y dos técnicos. Este nuevo incendio afecta a las inmediaciones de un parque natural que a finales del pasado mes de julio ya sufrió un gran incendio que comenzó en Fermoselle, obligó a evacuar catorce poblaciones y arrasó unas 11.150 hectáreas.
