Israeli airstrikes kill two in Gaza refugee camps as ceasefire falters
Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have killed at least two people, according to medical sources. The strikes, which occurred on Thursday, are the latest in a deadly escalation by the Israeli military despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that came into effect last year. The Israeli military issued displacement orders for several areas in Gaza before the bombing.
The strikes targeted multiple locations, including the Bureij and Jabalia refugee camps, as well as the Zeitoun and Tal al-Hawa neighborhoods of Gaza City. A separate strike in the Zeitoun neighborhood injured several people, according to a source at al-Ahli Hospital.
The airstrikes have drawn condemnation from various countries and organizations. Turkish Communications Director Burhanettin Duran strongly condemned the Israeli raid on Al-Aqsa Mosque, calling it a provocative attempt to erode Jerusalem's historical and legal status. Duran warned that such actions escalate regional tensions and undermine hopes for lasting peace.
Eight Arab and Muslim-majority countries, including Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, have strongly condemned the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem by far-right groups and thousands of Israeli settlers. In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of these countries denounced the "mass incursions by settlers led by extremist Israeli ministers into the Noble Sanctuary" of Al-Aqsa.
Israeli far-right police minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Thursday, praising Jewish visitors who prayed at the site in breach of arrangements that allow only Muslim prayer there. His visit drew condemnation from Jordan and Palestinian officials.
The European Union is considering sanctions against trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank. In a closed-doors discussion on July 13, EU foreign ministers overwhelmingly backed sanctioning trade with Israeli settlements. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said that a full ban on imports of goods produced in Israeli settlements received the "most support" from EU foreign ministers during the meeting in Brussels.
Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty urged U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday to accelerate the deployment of the International Stabilization Force (ISF) in Gaza. A statement from Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Abdelatty had stressed the need to promptly launch the committee tasked with administering Gaza to help contain tensions and restore regional stability.
The Israeli attacks come as the U.S. plan for Gaza, which includes the deployment of an international security force and the constriction of the territory, stalls. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 73,311 Palestinians, according to local health authorities, including more than 1,185 people since the October 2025 ceasefire.
In a related development, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that Iran would suffer a "devastating blow" if it attacks Israel. Katz made the remarks during a security meeting attended by the chief of staff of the Israeli army, Eyal Zamir, and other senior officials.
