Israeli airstrikes kill two in Gaza refugee camps as ceasefire falters
Israeli airstrikes in Gaza on Tuesday killed at least one Palestinian and wounded more than a dozen others, while also destroying a mosque and tents sheltering displaced people, according to reports.
Israeli warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes focusing on central and northern Gaza, including the Al-Muttaqin Mosque near the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) building in Gaza City, said Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from Deir el-Balah. The strike triggered a powerful explosion that destroyed the mosque and injured several Palestinians. In a separate strike on the Nuseirat refugee camp, one Palestinian was killed and at least 20 others were wounded, according to health officials.
"The whole area was warned, but a very narrow window of time was given for people to take precautionary measures," Abu Azzoum said.
Meanwhile, in the occupied West Bank, eight Palestinians fled their home in Abu Najim, near Bethlehem, after Israeli settlers set fire to the building, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent. Settlers also torched a car and sprayed graffiti on the walls of the building before setting it ablaze, according to locals.
There has been a rise in settler violence targeting Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, as lynch mobs attack people in their own homes or in public spaces. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities are confiscating more Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank, according to the Wafa news agency, which reported Israel issuing military orders seizing about 200 dunums (20 hectares or 49 acres) of land from towns in the Jenin governorate.
Tareq Aghbaria, a Jenin settlement affairs official, told Wafa that Jenin has recently seen an increase in land confiscation orders – particularly over the past two days – mainly concentrated in southern areas, such as Arrabeh, Qabatiya, and Misilya.
The situation in the West Bank has been described as rapidly deteriorating by a high representative of the UN, who is calling on Israel to stop the violence against settlers and protect Palestinian communities from attacks.
On Sunday, Israel’s security cabinet approved a measure that would, in theory, grant entry to the first members of an International Stabilization Force in Gaza as part of the US-brokered “ceasefire” that began last October.
Since the announcement of the ceasefire imposed by Donald Trump in October 2025, Israeli strikes have caused the death of more than 1,100 Gazaouis, including nearly 300 minors, according to Unicef. Among the victims are the four children of the Al-Masri family, who died along with their parents when their house was hit by a missile and caught fire.
In recent days, several Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, and a pregnant Palestinian woman lost her baby after being unable to pass a checkpoint and be hospitalized, according to Mediapart.
France has reminded the Israeli army of its "responsibility to protect civilian populations."
In the West Bank and Gaza, Palestinians continue to be killed and bury their dead, while violence continues and worsens, and Israeli colonization continues, according to Mediapart.
