Israeli airstrikes killed at least nine Palestinians across the Gaza Strip early Sunday, despite Hamas’ announcement that it had agreed to the latest stage of a U.S.-backed ceasefire deal aimed at ending the war.
The strikes targeted residential buildings in Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, and Khan Younis, according to Gaza civil defense officials and medical sources. The Israeli military stated that the strikes in Deir al-Balah targeted two commanders of Hamas’ elite Nukhba force and that other strikes in Gaza City and Jabalia were aimed at military operatives. It added that the situation was still under review .
Hamas said Friday it had agreed to a U.S.-backed plan that includes provisions for handing over its weapons and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday a breakthrough in negotiations, and his Board of Peace published a 15-point roadmap on Friday outlining final steps to implement a ceasefire agreement reached last year in Egypt .
However, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet, said Sunday there was no deal to halt attacks on Gaza. Cohen stated he saw a need for Israel to take full control of the enclave, adding that he did not believe Hamas would disarm . An Israeli official told Reuters there would be no withdrawal from current military positions unless Hamas undergoes “genuine disarmament” .
Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that 152 people were killed in the enclave in July, the highest monthly toll this year, as Israeli forces continued to violate the ceasefire agreement that took effect on Oct. 10 . The ministry also warned Saturday that Gaza’s medical system was nearing collapse after Israeli forces destroyed a drug warehouse at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, worsening shortages of essential medicines .
Earlier Saturday, eight people were killed in strikes that damaged medical supplies at a hospital and targeted a rooftop, according to Gaza authorities . Gaza’s Civil Defense agency said Saturday it had recovered 112 bodies, including 40 children and 38 women, from a residential block destroyed in November 2023, with 157 more victims still trapped beneath rubble .
