Water levels on the Rhine, Danube and other major European rivers have fallen to historic lows, disrupting shipping, industry and agriculture as a prolonged drought grips the continent.

At Kaub, Germany, the Rhine’s shallowest point, levels dropped on Friday to a single-digit measurement, the lowest since records began, threatening to split the river and halt navigation entirely. Cargo vessels at Rotterdam, Europe’s largest port, are now loaded to only about 30% capacity to avoid grounding, forcing operators to hire roughly 100 additional barges weekly while still falling short of previous transport volumes, according to Lex Bezemer at the Port of Rotterdam Authority .

The Danube in Budapest reached 16 centimeters on Tuesday morning, with forecasts of a further drop to 13 centimeters later in the day, marking a historic low for the Hungarian capital . In Romania, the river has lost its appearance in some stretches, with exposed vegetation and mudflats replacing open water near Giurgiu .

Agricultural losses are mounting. The German Farmers’ Association reported severe crop failures, with southern regions facing total losses for grains and rapeseed, while livestock farmers cull herds due to feed shortages. Joachim Ruckwied, the association’s president, said farmers are taking on loans to offset economic damage . In France, vegetable production has plummeted, with deficits of 25% for zucchini, 35% for lettuce, 40% for peas, 60% for broccoli and 50-100% for artichokes, according to cultivators cited by The Guardian .

Industrial and energy sectors are also under strain. Chemical giant Covestro has warned it can no longer guarantee some deliveries due to disrupted raw material shipments along the Rhine. In Cyprus, dam storage stands at 38.9%, just above the 35% safety threshold, with projections showing some systems could fall below critical levels by the end of 2026 if dry conditions persist, according to the Water Development Department .

Climatologists attribute the trend to accelerating climate change. Massimo Tavoni, director of the European Institute on Economics and the Environment, described Europe as a “hotspot for climate change,” noting that droughts are long-lasting and economically damaging . Copernicus Climate Change reported June and July as the hottest on record in western Europe, with average temperatures of 21.62°C .

In Lithuania, hydrologists observed a three-decade decline in river levels, driven by increased evaporation rather than reduced rainfall. Gediminas Sližys of the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service reported the Nemunas River near Druskininkai running 40 centimeters below the mid-August average, harming local ecosystems .

As Europes rivers hit record lows, what does the future hold for Lithuanias waterways? While this summers headlines have focused on record-low water levels on the Rhine, Danube and Vistula, Lithuanias own rivers have been in slow decline for three decades – a trend scientists say will accelerate as the climate warms further, regardless of how much rain falls in any given year.

Voda nikde.
