Firefighters across Europe battled wildfires and chemical incidents over the weekend, with flare-ups reported in Belgium, France, and North Macedonia.

In Belgium’s Hautes Fagnes region, authorities confirmed multiple reignitions in the southeast and northeast sectors of a burned area, all controlled by ground crews without significant spread. Aerial surveillance continued with drones from the federal police and DNF, while tests of automated sprinkler systems—part of tactical fire prevention—were extended through Monday amid forecasts of heightened wildfire risk. Despite access bans, 15 fines were issued, primarily to foreign cyclists, and the N68 road remains closed between Belle-Croix and Eupen at least until Sept. 13 .

In France’s Vallée d’Aspe, a wildfire in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques expanded to 125 hectares by Sunday evening, up from 105 hectares the day before, with officials describing the situation as “rather stable” but noting persistent hotspots and unfavorable weather .

In North Macedonia, two firefighting planes were deployed to the village of Miletino near Tetovo, where a large forest fire threatened settlements. Local firefighters struggled with inaccessible terrain, according to Stojance Angelov, director of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue .
