The United States threatened Iran on Friday with economic isolation “like the world has never seen before,” as Washington vowed to maintain an indefinite naval blockade of Iranian ports and escalate financial pressure on Tehran.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday that new measures would be announced next week, describing a strategy combining economic isolation and a continued blockade in the Strait of Hormuz to prevent vessels from entering or leaving Iranian ports. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told reporters the U.S. military could sustain the naval presence indefinitely by rotating ships into the region.
The United Arab Emirates accused Iran of attacking two oil tankers linked to its national oil company Adnoc in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday evening, calling the incident a threat to regional stability and global energy security. No casualties were reported. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations also reported a tanker sustained minor damage from a drone strike during an outbound transit of the strait on Friday, advising vessels to exercise caution.
Iran has demanded the U.S. lift its blockade of Iranian ports, remove sanctions, withdraw American forces from the region, and pay war reparations before it will reopen the strait or resume negotiations. Tehran has also installed sea mines and fired on ships failing to comply with its directives in parts of the waterway, where shipping traffic has been severely restricted since late February following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
A salvage operation is underway for the tanker *Caroline Bezengi*, which ran aground near Oman’s coast on June 30 after an unexplained attack. The vessel, carrying 800,000 barrels of Russian oil and under international sanctions, has been leaking oil for four weeks, with the spill now covering 1,300 square kilometers, according to environmental group Greenpeace.
North Korea separately condemned upcoming U.S.-South Korea military drills on Friday, calling them a “war rehearsal” and threatening unspecified “stern steps” in response. Pyongyang accused Washington of pushing the world toward nuclear war.
