Ukraine launched a massive overnight drone attack on Moscow and the surrounding region, targeting the Russian capital with 650 drones, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Tuesday. Russian air defenses claimed to have destroyed most of the drones, including 105 on approaches to the city.

At least two people were killed and six injured in the strikes, according to Moscow Oblast Governor Andrei Vorobyov. One fatality occurred in Radumlya and another in Barybino, while a drone crashed into a warehouse in Litvinovo, triggering a fire. Vorobyov also reported damage to more than 10 private homes in Istra, Lobanovo, and Radumlya.

Among the apparent targets was the Volodarskaya Line Production and Dispatch Station, the largest oil depot in the Moscow region, operated by Transnefteprodukt. The facility, which supplies fuel to Moscow’s three major airportsβ€”Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Sheremetyevoβ€”was reportedly set ablaze. The attack follows Ukraine’s recent strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, including a Transneft facility in Samara Oblast on Oct. 2.

Sheremetyevo Airport, Russia’s largest, temporarily suspended operations due to the drone assault, which continued into the morning, Sobyanin said. Russian state news agency TASS described the attack as the second-largest on the capital in two years.
