The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) won first place in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s state election on Sunday, exit polls showed, as Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) suffered its worst result since 1949.
The AfD secured 37-38% of the vote in the northeastern state, ahead of the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) at 35.5-36.5%, according to public broadcasters ARD and ZDF. The CDU polled at just 5.5%, barely crossing the threshold to enter the state parliament, a result Merz called a “disaster” .
Merz, who had convened a crisis meeting of CDU leadership, vowed to remain chancellor and push ahead with reforms. “The reforms have to come,” he said. “I am taking on this responsibility because I want to move our country forward” .
In Berlin’s concurrent election, the far-left Die Linke led with 24.5-26%, while the CDU trailed at 20%. The AfD also gained ground in the capital, winning 16% .
The AfD’s victory follows its recent triumph in Saxony-Anhalt, where it secured 44% two weeks ago. Despite its gains, the AfD remains unlikely to form a government in either state due to a “firewall” of non-cooperation from other major parties .
