Police in Neustadt am Rübenberge, Lower Saxony, shot at a car that had deliberately driven into a group of people late on Monday, injuring four to five individuals, some seriously.

The injured were taken to hospital but are not in life-threatening condition, a police spokeswoman said. The suspects fled on foot, abandoning the vehicle, which was struck multiple times by gunfire. Authorities launched a large-scale search involving heavily armed officers, a helicopter, and a police dog, but no arrests were made.

The incident occurred near a routine traffic checkpoint shortly before midnight, allowing officers to respond immediately. They opened fire to stop the car after it targeted the group, the spokeswoman confirmed. Investigators believe the parties involved may have known each other, though the exact circumstances remain under investigation.

The scene was cordoned off for several hours to secure evidence. Police have not yet clarified the number of suspects or their motives, stating only that the case remains active .
